About Your Instructor
Liz Wyatt, BA, BEd, E-RYT 550
Welcome to my website. Here's a bit about me and the yoga that I teach.
I have over 25 years of yoga practice, teaching and teacher mentoring.
With a professional background in education and fitness leadership, I bring my skills in teaching and my knowledge of yoga techniques and philosophy into every class. I'm known for my respect for the yoga tradition, my easy going manner, and ever-present sense of humour.
"Slow and subtle" is the way I teach. Slow and mindful yoga is not the same thing as strong physical exercise; it is a different practice rooted in ancient wisdom and modern neuroscience. Although you will notice gains in strength, flexibility and mobility, you will also become aware of the differences that you feel as you gradually bring your nervous system into balance.
Whether you choose to participate sitting in a chair or on a mat on the floor, think of "working in" instead of "working out".
Core Principles of Slow and Mindful Yoga
Breath Awareness
Breathwork is the foundation. You'll use deep, slow breaths to guide your movements and learn a variety of techniques to gently raise energy or to calm down.
Postures/Poses
The poses are simple, practised slowly, and often layered with effective, fun variations. We move in and out of every pose and then stay for a short time. Make every pose your own. Achieving "the perfect pose" is not a consideration.
Mindfulness
You are encouraged to pay attention to your body's sensations and the flow of your breath in moment to moment awareness to avoid rushing.
Pausing
"The pause is as important as the pose." Throughout the class we'll pause our movement and relax for a few breaths in a restorative pose to reflect on our experience.
